 If any of you have been following the weather reported from my Station in Kirkliston, which of course you all are, not, you will have been amazed at how Kirkliston recorded zero wind during the recent gales.

Unfortunately this was not due to the fact we are an oasis, but rather because all wind recording instruments on my Watson Weather Station has seized!

The station is now fully repaired and appears to be accurate.

Would you believe it, I missed recording all that high wind!

I am in the same boat!  My wind sensor froze solid just before Christmas for a couple of days, thawed and then the whole sensor suite went down just after Hogmanay.  I repaired the corroded pcb and temperature came back, but no wind. I have a replacement wind sensor which I tested which works and just need to replace it with the one on the roof. I have just got back from 3 days away and during that time, my station was showing 50C (for Tayside !!). I must check my soldering on the sensor board today. Meanwhile I am using the Metar from RAF Leuchars to show at least some fairly local readings on my website.

My VP2 appears to have worn some grooves in the direction potentiometer around WSW (our most common direction) & the resulting dead spots report as N, hence the reason the Elgol direction is often bucking the trend. The same sort of thing happened about 2 years ago. 

And as part of maintenance the mast is currently at half height, which puts it well into turbulence from the house for any sort of westerly, hence in the early January storm we had a 63mph before midnight, when there was still plenty of S in the direction, rather than something much higher from the WSW in the small hours (my guess is that the full height mast would have recorded at least high 80's, possibly into the 90's).

For a couple of weeks now the mast has been in a new position. Still at half height (~5m) but in good clean air so it's showing speed much more consistently & realistically. Solving the direction problem will mean getting a replacement, I hope to be ordering that shortly, then I'll need to wait for weather & free time to coincide to allow a change over.

Carseweather wind is now back  .   A plug had corroded on the anemometer extension lead. A quick trip to Maplin yesterday for a replacement and we are now back up and reporting.

Reasonable weather & free time managed to get together last Saturday, so the direction on the Elgol stats is now looking more sensible  - no longer showing N when everyone else on the West coast has SW!
